The Live Comics Shows!
Performative shows about mixing comics and other arts that will tour Europe to showcase new paths for comic art and its professionals.
Comics Beyond opened a second call for artists to propose their version of a Live Comics Show.
What’s a Live Comics Show?
It’s a live exhibition about comic art joining forces with other performative mediums that can be shown on stages. Every Live Show has to overcome the language barrier: the narration needs to be done with the fewest words possible or none at all. It can be a concert with a unique live drawing experience, a dance performance involving comics creation, or puppetry, acting, cinema and more. The creativity of the applicants was almost the only limit.
The application period officially closed on 15 September 2024, and the response has been incredible: creative Duos from across Europe came together to share their unique visions of their ideal live comic performance.
After much deliberation, four projects were selected:
- Moby Dick City Blues by Miorelli x Bechini (mentored by COMICON, Italy)
- Inyeon by Henin x Marty (mentored by On a Marché sur la Bulle, France)
- Am I Not a Woman? by Zhou x Ruth Frias (mentored by Amadora BD, Portugal)
- MONKEYBIZ by Valagussa x Del Grandi (mentored by Brussels Comic Art Museum, Belgium)
The big debut is set for COMICON Napoli 2025, where the first of these incredible performances will hit the stage. Then the other three shows will be performed on other european stages, yet to be determined.
Also a big thank you goes to the amazing jury, who had the challenging task of selecting the winners:
- Davide Toffolo: Comic artist and musician representing Italy.
- Vincent Eches: Director of the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée in France.
- João Mascarenhas: Artist and illustrator from Portugal.
- Julie Tait: Founder of the globally renowned Lakes International Comic Art Festival in the UK.
