COMICS BEYOND
Launching the second call: the Live Comics Shows.
Comics Beyond is a project under the call for projects of the Creative Europe Program – Cultural Cooperation Projects (small scale). The project is supportedwith a grant of €200 k by the European Commission.
With the launch of its first call (started on 16th February 2024 and ended on 17th March 2024) aiming to help European comics artists struggling with career opportunities, Comics Beyond was officially born. The previous call was a big success with more than a hundred applications from all over Europe. The twelve selected artists of the first call will attend their training week in Amadora on the first days of July for professional lessons and workshops.
Now is time to launch the second call!
Comics Beyond is looking for four artistic teams (ideally made of two people) to develop four Live Comics Shows, from an original concept all the way to having it live on stage in front of a crowd of people.
These projects have to be about mixing comic art with other performative mediums that can be shown on stage, even if the team of candidates does not involve a comic artist in their ranks. Each selected live comics show’s narration has to overcome the language barrier: the narration needs to be done with the fewest words possible or none at all. It can be a concert with a unique live drawing experience, a dance performance involving comics creation, or they can even use puppets, acting, cinema and more for their project. Their creativity is almost the only limit.
But the show needs to be tourable (not overly ambitious in terms of set design i.e).
In fact, once selected and ready to be staged, each project will be shown twice, once as part of the Comics Beyond partners events (concerts, festivals and more), once at other events and locations in Europe. But first, each selected team will also come to COMICON Napoli (Italy) with the partners for a kick-off meeting, in early May 2025. For this meeting in Italy, Comics Beyond would cover all the costs for the four teams.
The selected teams will have to prepare the live comics shows autonomously but each team will have a dedicated Comics Beyond’s partner that will coordinate and support them artistically and technically.
The jury will be composed of professionals and one representative from each project partner.
Participation is free of charge. Every team should be formed by two members (more are allowed but the travel and other costs will be covered only for two) and each team will receive a 3.000€ grant to fund their project.
The selected teams and artists will be announced at the end of October.
Comics Beyond is supported by the European Commission as part of the Creative Europe – Cultural cooperation projects (small scale) program. Four comics professional structures from different countries are cooperating to make the project a reality: the Brussels Comic Art Museum (Belgium), Amadora BD (Portugal), Rendez-vous BD Amiens (France) and COMICON Napoli (Italy), in partnership with Escola Joso (Spain), Art Bubble Festival (Denmark) and the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival (United-Kingdom).
Led by the Brussels Comic Art Museum, Comics Beyond brings together all of these renowned international partners, each one working on different aspects of the project, to make the project’s mission a reality and to develop an European network for comic art.
